Freshman quarterback Max Wittek threw 2 touchdowns, redshirt freshman tight end Xavier Grimble caught a pair of short TDs and tailback Dillon Baxter ran for more than 100 yards to highlight USC's second intrasquad football scrimmage of 2011 fall camp on Sunday (Aug. 8) in the Coliseum.

Wittek, who was 12-of-23 for 157 yards overall, hit Baxter on a 21-yard scoring pass and then ended the scrimmage with a 4-yard touchdown toss to freshman wide receiver Victor Blackwell. Grimble caught a 1-yard TD from quarterback Matt Barkley and a 2-yarder from freshman quarterback Cody Kessler. On the day, Baxter ran for 101 yards on 16 carries, caught a pair of passes for 25 yards and returned 2 kickoffs for 72 yards.

Barkley was 18-of-28 for 135 yards and Kessler was 14-of-21 for 86 yards. Wittek and Kessler each threw an interception.

Freshman placekicker Andre Heidari connected on both of his field goal attempts (21 and 46 yards) for the only scores in the scrimmage's first half.

Freshman tailback Amir Carlisle ran for 75 yards on 15 carries, including a 3-yard touchdown, while redshirt freshman tailback D.J. Morgan added 44 yards on 8 rushes.

Freshman wide receiver Marqise Lee caught 7 passes for 87 yards and redshirt freshman wideout Kyle Prater added 5 receptions for 48 yards.

On defense, walk-on safety Cody Romness had a game-high 7 tackles, while cornerbacks Nickell Robey, Torin Harris and Anthony Brown and linebackers Hayes Pullard and walk-on Will Andrew each added 5 stops. Defensive ends Kevin Greene and freshman Charles Burks each had 3 sacks. Harris and safety Drew McAllister both had an interception.

"I thought the defense played well, starting slow but then causing some issues," said second-year USC head coach Lane Kiffin. "A lot of freshmen showed up well today. Marqise Lee played extremely well and the backup quarterbacks played very well. All 3 quarterbacks were very efficient, but an unusual amount of dropped balls affected their percentages. Dillon Baxter put together a good week of practice and it showed up today. But I'm disappointed with the consistency of the offensive line. As a team, we've still got a long way to go with a lot of hard work ahead of us."
