Quarterback Matt Barkley threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to tight end Randall Telfer on a hot Friday (Aug. 10) afternoon in the Coliseum to highlight USC's first intrasquad football scrimmage of fall 2012 practice.

The day's only other score came when walk-on cornerback William Tober returned a fumble 73 yards.

Barkley was 7-of-16 for 109 yards, while backups Max Wittek (6-of-10, 77 yards) and Cody Kessler (4-of-8, 35 yards, 1 interception) split the rest of the work.

Tailback D.J. Morgan had 69 yards on 10 carries and Buck Allen added 30 yards on 9 carries. Penn State transfer tailback Silas Redd carried just twice, but ripped off a 43-yard run.

The 73-play scrimmage came on the Trojans' first day in full pads in fall camp. The offense had 3 turnovers, was penalized 5 times and gave up 4 sacks.

Tober had 4 tackles, while safeties Drew McAllister and Gerald Bowman, cornerback Kevon Seymour and linebacker Scott Starr each had 3 stops. Linebacker Will Andrew had an interception.

"It was our first time out in the Coliseum and it was good to see the guys in action, although the young players made some mistakes," said third-year USC head coach Lane Kiffin. "The defense was ahead of the offense a lot of the time. But we got in some good work."

The No. 3-ranked Trojans open their 2012 season at home against Hawaii on Sept. 1, with tickets available online at USCTrojans.com or by calling the USC Ticket Office at (213) 740-4672.
