Quarterback Matt Barkley threw 5 touchdown passes, including a pair to freshman wide receiver Kyle Prater, to highlight USC's 93-play intrasquad football scrimmage on Saturday (April 17) at USC.

Barkley was 21-of-30 for 291 yards. His scoring tosses, in order, were 5 yards to fullback Stanley Havili, a 13-yarder to Prater, 15 yards to wide receiver Brice Butler, a 40-yard one-handed grab by Prater and 12 yards to tight end Jordan Cameron.

Butler caught 6 passes overall for 77 yards, Cameron had 5 grabs for 72 yards, wide receiver Travon Patterson had 4 receptions for 54 yards and Havili had 4 for 44 yards.

Quarterback Mitch Mustain hit 7-of-14 passes for 104 yards, but threw an interception (by cornerback T.J. Bryant).

While the passing game was clicking, the Trojan running attack was held somewhat in check, with no rushing touchdowns. Tailback Allen Bradford (7 carries for 45 yards) and C.J. Gable (11 carries for 41 yards) were the top ground gainers.

Defensive end Nick Perry had a big day, with 4 of his 5 tackles going for losses (including 3 sacks). Other top tacklers were safety T.J. McDonald (7), linebacker Devon Kennard (6), end Malik Jackson (6), end Wes Horton (5), tackle DaJohn Harris (5) and linebacker Michael Morgan (5).

"The story of the day was the way the defense came right out and dominated up front," said new USC head coach Lane Kiffin. "We couldn't get the run game going. The defense is coming together.

"Offensively, we have to learn how to run well. We're not playing at a championship level in our run game. But Barkley was really good today. He's playing well. We've got to push him now"

USC has 2 weeks remaining of spring practice, concluding with the Spring Football Game in the Coliseum on May 1 at noon, with tickets available for $10 at the gate, online at USCTrojans.com or by calling the USC Ticket Office at (213) 740-4672. The Trojans open their 2010 season at Hawaii on Sept. 2.
