Tailback D.J. Morgan ran for a pair of short touchdowns and quarterback Matt Barkley threw for 2 scores but it was the defense that dominated during USC's second spring intrasquad football scrimmage on a hot Saturday (April 16) morning at the Coliseum. Morgan, who ran for 51 yards on 14 carries, scored on a 5-yard run on the scrimmage's 73rd and final play. USC's other 4 touchdowns came during goal line drills in the opening portion of the scrimmage. Morgan had a 2-yard scoring run during those goal line drills, as did tailback Curtis McNeal, who gained 49 yards on 13 carries overall. Barkley completed 17-of-28 passes for 154 yards. He threw a pair of 2-yard TDs to wide receiver Robert Woods in the opening goal line drills. Woods had 8 receptions for 71 yards overall. Wide receivers Brandon Carswell (43 yards) and De'Von Flournoy (29 yards) each grabbed 3 receptions. Quarterback Jesse Scroggins hit 4-of-5 passes for 48 yards, with an interception. Linebackers Marquis Simmons and Will Andrew each had 6 tackles, while linebacker Dallas Kelley had the interception. The Trojan offense was penalized 7 times, mainly for motion and illegal shift penalties. "The defense dominated today," said second-year USC head coach Lane Kiffin. "They played with a great mentality. I'm very pleased with the way the defense played, especially the front 7. The offense did not perform well. A lot of freshmen didn't perform well today, especially on offense." USC concludes spring practice next week with the Spring Football Game in the Coliseum on April 23 at 1 p.m., with tickets available for $10 at the gate, online at USCTrojans.com or by calling the USC Ticket Office at (213) 740-4672. The Trojans open their 2011 season at home against Minnesota on Sept. 3.
