Defense Wins USC Spring Football Game Despite Long TDs By Morgan, Vainuku

    Despite long touchdowns by tailback D.J. Morgan and fullback Soma Vainuku, USC's defense beat the Trojan offense, 34-27, in the USC Spring Football Game before 15,515 fans at the Coliseum on a windy Saturday (April 14).

    The defense was awarded 3 points for defensive stops of drives and 5 points for turnovers in the 91-play game that concluded USC's spring football practice.

    Morgan opened the day's scoring with a 47-yard TD run, then placekicker Andre Heidari added field goals of 28 and 47 yards in the first half. In the second half, wide receiver Marqise Lee caught a 1-yard scoring pass from quarterback Matt Barkley, then late in the game quarterback Cody Kessler found Vainuku streaking up the sideline on a 44-yard TD toss.

    The Trojan defense came up with interceptions by safety Drew McAllister (off of Kessler) and cornerback Brian Baucham (off of Barkley).

    Barkley was 23-of-39 passing for 212 yards, while Kessler was 3-of-6 for 68 yards and fellow redshirt freshman Max Wittek was 3-of-7 for 27 yards. Lee caught 7 passes for 57 yards, while wide receiver De'Von Flournoy also had 7 receptions (for 69 yards). Vainuku had 4 catches for 66 yards and tight end Xavier Grimble had 4 grabs for 73 yards.

    Morgan ran 6 times for 53 yards on a day when the Trojans rushed 28 times and passed 61 times.

    Linebacker Hayes Pullard and cornerback Anthony Brown each had 6 tackles, while linebacker Dion Bailey added 5 stops. Cornerback Isiah Wiley had 5 deflections to go along with his 4 tackles. There were 3 sacks (by defensive ends Devon Kennard, Greg Townsend Jr. and Morgan Breslin).

    USC, coming off a 10-2 season, opens its 2012 schedule by hosting Hawaii in the Coliseum on Sept. 1.
