Quarterback Max Browne threw 2 touchdown passes, Cody Kessler tossed another, wideout Christian Tober caught a pair of TDs and placekickers Matt Boermeester and Alex Wood both hit field goals of more than 50 yards to help the Trojan offense beat the defense, 37-23, in the USC football team's 82-play spring game on Saturday (April 11) before 22,788 fans in the Coliseum.

USC mixed in portions of practice drills and fan participation during the game, which concluded Troy's 15 days of spring practice.

In the game's scoring system, the defense was awarded points for three-and-outs, fourth down stops and other defensive stops and turnovers, while the offense could score points by making first downs in certain situations in addition to the traditional scoring opportunities.

Kessler hit 8-of-10 passes for 126 yards and Browne was 24-of-37 for 251 yards, with both quarterbacks hitting Tober on 4-yard TDs. Browne's other scoring toss was a 15-yarder to wide receiver JuJu Smith, who had 9 catches for 152 yards overall.

Boermeester hit field goals of 52 and 39 yards, while Wood had 51- and 35-yarders. Neither kicker missed a field goal.

With passing an emphasis on the day, wide receivers Steven Mitchell added 7 catches for 90 yards, Isaac Whitney had 5 receptions for 45 yards and Darreus Rogers had 4 grabs for 30 yards.

Five defenders each had a game-best 5 tackles: outside linebacker Su'a Cravens (including a pair for losses), cornerback Kevon Seymour, safeties Leon McQuay and Matt Lopes and inside linebacker Cameron Smith.

The defense had 2 turnovers, with linebacker Joel Foy recovering a fumbled handoff and cornerback Jalen Jones intercepting a pass off freshman quarterback Ricky Town.

"We got a glimpse of what we expect in the fall," said second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian. "We emphasized passing today and the passing game looked good. Cody did his thing and Max made plays. And I loved how our defense created turnovers and made stops. It was a good day for Trojan football. But we have a lot of work to do to get ready for fall camp."

USC opens its 2015 season with 3 home games in the Coliseum against Arkansas State (Sept. 5), Idaho (Sept. 12) and Stanford (Sept. 19). For tickets, call 213-740-GOSC or visit GetTrojanTix.com.
