Quarterback Matt Barkley completed 22-of-33 passes for 152 yards, including 10 to wide receiver Robert Woods for 65 yards to highlight USC's first spring intrasquad football scrimmage on Saturday (April 9) at the Coliseum.

Barkley began the day by throwing 2-yard TD tosses on his first 4 passes during goal line drills, to wide receiver Brandon Carswell, fullback Soma Vainuku, tight end Randall Telfer and Woods. Later during the 86-play scrimmage, Barkley found Vainuku on a 3-yard scoring pass and then connected with Woods on a pair of 11-yard TD passes.

Carswell had 5 catches for 49 yards and Vainuku added 4 receptions for 11 yards.

Tailback D.J. Morgan ran for 51 yards on 16 carries and fellow tailback Curtis McNeal added 42 yards on 8 carries.

Defensive tackle George Uko and safety Demetrius Wright each had 7 tackles, with 3 of Uko's for losses. Linebacker Dallas Kelley added 6 stops with a deflection, cornerback Anthony Brown had 5 tackles (2 for losses, with a sack) plus a deflection and safety Jawanza Starling had 5 tackles. Defensive end Nick Perry knocked down 2 passes.

"We did some good things today," said second-year USC head coach Lane Kiffin. "It was very spirited and competitive. Barkley played very well and it was good to see Woods do so many things. Morgan and Vainuku also did some good things today.

"I feel great about the direction the offense is progressing. We're really trying to improve it. At the end of the day, we have a really good quarterback and receiver, and we need to develop the others around them."

USC has 2 weeks remaining of spring practice, concluding with the Spring Football Game in the Coliseum on April 23 at 1 p.m., with tickets available for $10 at the gate, online at or by calling the USC Ticket Office at (213) 740-4672.
