LOS ANGELES-Fourteen high school football players and 2 junior college players signed letters of intent with 7-time defending Pac-10 champion USC, Trojan head coach Pete Carroll announced today.

Additionally, QB Matt Barkley of Mater Dei High in Santa Ana, Calif., already enrolled at USC in January as a freshman and will participate in next month's spring practice.

This fall's incoming freshmen are: DE James Boyd of Jordan HS in Los Angeles, Calif.; WR De'Von Flournoy of Birmingham HS in Van Nuys, Calif.; OL Kevin Graf of Agoura (Calif.) HS; DE-LB Kevin Greene of Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep HS in San Francisco, Calif.; DB Patrick Hall of St. Bonaventure HS in Ventura, Calif.; DB Torin Harris of Palo Verde HS in Las Vegas, Nev.; LB Jarvis Jones of Carver HS in Columbus, Ga.; DE Devon Kennard of Desert Vista HS in Phoenix, Ariz.; OL John Martinez of Cottonwood HS in Salt Lake City, Utah; DB T.J. McDonald of Edison HS in Fresno, Calif.; DB Byron Moore of Narbonne HS in Harbor City, Calif.; LB Marquis Simmons of Dominguez HS in Compton, Calif.; LB-DB Frankie Telfort of Gulliver Prep HS in Miami, Fla.; and FB Simione Vehikite of Kapolei (Hi.) HS.

The pair of junior college transfers who will be joining USC as juniors in the fall are: DT Hebron Fangupo and PK-P Jacob Harfman, both of Mt. San Antonio Junior College in Walnut, Calif.

"We're very pleased with this class of recruits, as these are top-quality players both athletically and academically," said Carroll, whose Trojans went 12-1 last season with a Rose Bowl victory and have appeared in an NCAA-record 7 consecutive BCS bowls, posted 7 straight 11-win seasons and had 7 consecutive AP Top 4 finishes. "We signed 3 players who were ranked as the top at their position in the nation (Barkley at quarterback, Kennard at defensive end, Martinez at center), highlighted by the No. 1 player in the country in Matt Barkley.

"This is an extraordinarily fast class across the board and every player is really athletic. They are all very versatile players who can contribute on either side of the ball. We obviously put a huge emphasis on defense in this class, because of our defensive personnel losses this year and because we have so many returnees on offense.

"We signed a good mix of in-state and out-of-state players. Our coaching staff really hit it hard and came up with one of our most competitive classes from top to bottom. Every one of these players will have a chance to contribute this year and we expect them to do so early on, especially at the linebacker and defensive end spots."

Carroll said additional signees could be announced in the future.
