USC Signs 21 Prep Footballers; Three Other Players Already Enrolled
Feb. 1, 2006
LOS ANGELES - Twenty-one high school football players signed letters of intent with four-time defending Pac-10 champion USC, Trojan head coach Pete Carroll announced today.
Additionally, three others-TE Gerald Washington of Chaffey Junior College in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., DL Walker Lee Ashley of Eden Prairie (Minn.) High and DB Antwine Perez of Woodrow Wilson High in Camden, N.J.-enrolled at USC in January and will participate in next month's spring practice. Washington is a junior, while Ashley (who originally signed with USC last year but did not qualify for admission then) and Perez are freshmen.
Carroll said USC possibly could sign several additional players soon.
For the fourth consecutive year, many national recruiting publications have listed USC's class among the tops in the nation in 2006.
"I'm very pleased with the class of football players that we signed," said Carroll, whose Trojans went 12-1 last season, have won 45 of their last 47 games (including a since-broken 34-game winning streak), appeared in four consecutive BCS bowls and won two of the last three national championships. "I'm really proud of the job our coaching staff did in recruiting the best players from California and also getting some of the top out-of-state players. They worked hard to get a group of players who will come in and compete for playing time right away.
"One of our objectives with this class was to upgrade the speed of our team and we've done that. From top to bottom, this is the fastest class we've brought in. We also wanted to hit it hard in the skill positions and we did that, especially with the wide receivers, running backs and safeties. And our defensive line recruits really give us a chance to add to that unit."
This fall's incoming freshmen are: RB Kenny Ashley of Venice High in Los Angeles, Calif.; WR David Ausberry of Lemoore (Calif.) High; DB Allen Bradford of Colton (Calif.) High; ATH C.J. Gable of Sylmar (Calif.) High; QB Garrett Green of Notre Dame High in Sherman Oaks, Calif.; FB Stanley Havili of Cottonwood High in Salt Lake City, Ut.; OL Zack Heberer of San Pedro (Calif.)
