USC Game Notes
USC improves to 59-29-3 against Stanford and ends the Cardinal's four-game win streak vs. USC, the Trojans' longest skid in the 92-game series. USC improved to 6-10 all-time against ranked Stanford teams.
The win over No. 5 Stanford was USC's first over a ranked opponent since winning at No. 4 Oregon 38-35 on Nov. 19, 2011. It was the first ranked opponent USC played this year.
Tonight's game was a sellout with 93,607 fans in attendance. It was USC's first sellout since last season's Notre Dame game.
PK Andre Heidari hit a 23-yard field goal in the second quarter, then he hit the game-winning 47-yard field goal with 19 seconds left for the win to make him 13-for-20 on the season. His game-winning kick was USC's first last-minute game-winning field goal since David Bell kicked a 36-yarder to defeat UCLA 38-35 in 2000.
This was USC's ninth consecutive win over the Cardinal when facing them the game after California.
Stanford entered the game making 52% of their third down conversions, but was 4-for-12 today (33%).
USC held Stanford to a season-low 17 points. The last time USC held Stanford to fewer points was a 42-0 win in 2006.
FB Soma Vainuku's first-quarter 1-yard TD catch was his first career touchdown.
QB Cody Kessler has thrown at least one touchdown in four of the last games and in nine of 11 games this year. He has thrown for at least 200 yards in six of the past seven games and seven times this year.
Kessler was 25-for-37 for 288 yards tonight and has completed 56-of-75 passes in his last three games (74.7%).
After opening 1-of-2 for nine yards, Kessler completed his next 10 passes for 149 more yards and one score before missing his second pass.
TB Javorius Allen made his first career start today. His 1-yard first-quarter run was his seventh TD in the last three games, sixth on the ground.
FS Dion Bailey's fourth-quarter interception was his team-high fourth of the season and 10th of his career. He now ranks tied for 17th all-time in interceptions by a Trojan.
SS Su'a Craven's fourth-quarter interception was also his fourth of the season to tie for the team lead.
Stanford had only allowed 26 first-quarter points all season prior to USC's 14 today.
OT Chad Wheeler's 3rd-quarter field goal block was USC's fourth this year.
USC was held to a season-low 23 rushing yards. The previous low this season had been 30 yards vs. Utah. The last time USC had fewer rushing yards was when they totaled 1-yard vs. Utah in the 2001 Las Vegas Bowl.
USC used just two defensive substitutions tonight, the fifth game this season using three or fewer defensive substitutions. One of the subs (CB Torin Harris) played one play.
