2001: Howard, who sat out the 2000 season with a knee injury, will battle to get into the tailback mix as a redshirt freshman in 2001. He will miss 2001 spring practice while recuperating from the injury.

2000: Howard redshirted as a freshman tailback in 2000, his first year at USC. He had surgery early in the season to remove torn cartilage from his left knee and was sidelined the rest of the year.

HIGH SCHOOL: He was a 1999 Super Prep All-American, Prep Star All-American, USA Today All-USA honorable mention, Prep Star Top 100 Dream Team, Prep Star Western Super 30, Super Prep All-Farwest, Tom Lemming All-West, Long Beach Press-Telegram Best in the West first team, Orange County Register Fab 15 second team, Tacoma News Tribune Western 100, Las Vegas Sun Super 11 second team, All-L.A. City first team, Los Angeles Times All-South Bay/Westside first team, South Bay Daily Breeze All-South Bay and All-Marine League MVP as a senior at Banning High in Wilmington (Calif.). He rushed for 1,698 yards on 221 carries (7.7 avg) with 19 TDs (he averaged 178.2 yards a game) and caught 15 passes for 201 yards as a running back, returned 2 kickoff for scores, and made 37 tackles, 1 sack, 4 interceptions and 1 forced fumble as a defensive back (he did all this despite missing 4 games with ankle and knee injuries). In one game, he ran for 241 yards and 4 TDs on 22 carries (11.0 avg). Banning won the L.A. City Invitational title in 1999.

As a 1998 junior, he was named a Student Sports Junior All-American, Cal-Hi Sports All-State second team, All-L.A. City first team, Los Angeles Times All-Central City Back of the Year, South Bay Daily Breeze All-South Bay MVP and Long Beach Press-Telegram Dream Team first team. He ran for a school-record 2,679 yards on 341 carries (7.9 avg) with 34 TDs and had 12 games with 100-plus rushing yards (4 games were for 200-plus yards) in 1998. In one game, he had 350 rushing yards and 3 TDs on 35 carries and in another he ran for 226 yards on only 11 carries. He also caught 40 passes for 535 yards (13.4 avg) with 2 scores in 1998 and returned 4 kickoffs for TDs. Banning made it to the L.A. City finals that year. Current Trojan Faaesea Mailo also went to Banning.
