    Running Backs/Run Game Coordinator

Deland McCullough, a former college and pro running back who spent the past 6 years coaching the position at Indiana, is in his first season as USC’s running backs coach and run game coordinator. He joined the Trojan staff in March of 2017.

McCullough, 44, also served as the Hoosiers’ special teams coordinator-return units in 2016.

During his tenure (2011-16) at Indiana, the Hoosiers broke 19 school rushing records, including most season rushing yards (3,163) and rushing yards per game (263.6) in 2014. Hoosier running backs lost just 1 fumble in 272 rushes in 2011 and just 4 fumbles over the 2015 and 2016 seasons. He was named the 2014 Big Ten Running Backs Coach of the Year. He was chosen to participate in the 2016 NCAA Champion Forum professional development program. The Hoosiers played in the 2015 Pinstripe Bowl and 2016 Foster Farms Bowl.

At Indiana, he tutored 3 future NFL running backs in Stephen Houston, Tevin Coleman (who scored a touchdown in Super Bowl LI) and Jordan Howard, while Devin Redding is likely to get drafted this year. Coleman (2015) and Howard (2016) became the first Indiana running backs to be drafted in consecutive years since 1990-92. In 2015, All-Big Ten first team honoree Howard (1,213) and Redding (1,012) each eclipsed 1,000 yards, a first in program history, and Redding did so again in 2016 (1,122) to become the first Hoosier to accomplish that since 1990-91. In 2014, Coleman was a unanimous All-American, All-Big Ten first teamer and Doak Walker Award finalist when he finished seventh in the Heisman Trophy voting and ran for a school record 2,036 yards.

McCullough came to Indiana after spending 2010 as an offensive and special teams intern at his alma mater, Miami (Ohio). The RedHawks captured the Mid-American Conference championship that season and won the Bowl. After the season, he was promoted to Miami’s running backs coach, but left soon after for Indiana.

Before Miami, McCullough worked in education at the high school level as a teacher, head football coach, athletic director and certified principal. He was the head coach at Harmony Community School in Cincinnati (Ohio) for 4 seasons (2001-04).

He set the MAC and Miami career records for rushing yards (4,368) and attempts (949) during his 4-year (1992-95) playing career. He was the first RedHawk to lead the team in rushing 4 years, topping the 1,000-yard mark on three occasions, and first to post back-to-back 200-yard rushing performances. He twice (1992 and 1995) won All-MAC first team honors (he was a second teamer in 1994). He was the first Miami player to earn MAC Freshman of the Year acclaim (1992) and was later a finalist for the Doak Walker Award. He was an All-American third teamer in 1995. He was inducted into the Miami Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004.

He earned his bachelor’s degree from Miami in 1996.

He played professionally with the NFL’s Cincinnati Bengals (1996-97) and Philadelphia Eagles (1997), the CFL’s Winnipeg Blue Bombers (1998-99) and the XFL’s Chicago Enforcers (2001).

He prepped at Campbell (Ohio) High.

He was born on Dec. 1, 1972. He and his wife, Darnell, have four sons, Deland Jr., 16, Dasan, 13, Daeh, 12, and Diem, 1.
