    Jeremy Bates, a highly-regarded quarterbacks coach with 7 years of NFL experience, is in his first year at USC. He joined the Trojan staff in January of 2009 and serves as the quarterbacks coach and assistant head coach of the offense.

    Bates, 32, handled the Broncos' quarterbacks in 2008-when he called plays for the NFL's No. 2 offense and helped Jay Cutler reach the Pro Bowl-after working with their quarterbacks and wide receivers in 2007. He was an offensive assistant when he first came to the Broncos in 2006, working primarily with the offensive line.

    Bates began his coaching career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, serving as the offensive quality control coach for 2 years (2002-03), then becoming the Buccaneers' assistant quarterback coach in 2004. Tampa Bay won Super Bowl XXXVII in 2002.

    He was the New York Jets' quarterbacks coach in 2005.

    He lettered at quarterback at both Tennessee (1995) and Rice (1997 and 1999). He also played baseball at Rice. He received his bachelor's degree from Rice in 1999.

    He prepped at Sevier County High in Sevierville, Tenn.

    His father, Jim, is a long-time NFL and college assistant coach, including many years as a defensive coordinator. His NFL stints were with the Buccaneers, Broncos, Green Bay Packers, Miami Dolphins (he even served as the interim head coach there for 7 games in 2004), Dallas Cowboys, Cleveland Browns and Atlanta Falcons. He also spent 3 seasons in the USFL and a season with the Arena Football League. His collegiate coaching stops included Tennessee, Southern Mississippi, Villanova, Kansas State, West Virginia, Texas Tech and Florida.

    Bates' brother, James, was a linebacker at Florida, where he captained the Gators' 1996 national championship team. He now is a television play-by-play announcer with the Mountain West Sports Network. He was born Aug. 27, 1976.
