Senior forward Sam Clancy, the 2002 Pac-10 Player of the Year and USC's first All-American since Harold Miner (1992), was named the team's MVP at the Trojans' annual awards banquet Sunday (April 21) on campus.
Clancy led USC in scoring (19.1), rebounding (9.4), field goal percentage (.494), blocks (1.5) and was second in steals (1.8). In Pac-10 games, Clancy tied for third in the conference in scoring (21.1) and was second in rebounding (9.8). He had 17 double-doubles on the year, including a nation's best 11 in a row at one point.
He finished his career as USC's third-leading scorer (1,657), second-leading rebounder (839) and all-time leading shot blocker (195).
Freshman guard Errick Craven, a 2002 Pac-10 All-Freshman first team selection, was named the Newcomer of the Year. Craven was USC's fourth-leading scorer (11.8) and his 68 steals led the Pac-10 and were the second-most ever at Troy. Craven's 376 points were also the most for a Trojan freshman since Harold Miner had 578 in 1990.
Freshman center Rory O'Neil earned the award for Most Improved while junior guard Robert Hutchinson was tabbed as Most Inspirational.
USC finished 22-10 and 12-6 in the Pacific-10 Conference (tied for second). The Trojans reached the Pac-10 Tournament's championship game and received a No. 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament. USC's 22 wins gave it back-to-back 20-win seasons (Troy was 24-10 last year) for only the second time in school history and the 46 wins over a two-year span is the most ever for the Trojans.
