Fontan & Wise Named USC Basketball's Team MVPs for 2012-13 Season

Seniors Jio Fontan and Eric Wise were named the 2012-13 USC men's basketball team most valuable players and were announced as the Sam Barry Award winners at the Trojans' annual awards banquet held tonight (April 9) in the Founders Room at the Galen Center.
Fontan started all 32 games for USC at point guard and was the team leader, averaging 9.3 points, 5.3 assists and 1.7 rebounds. He finished the season with 168 assists, the fifth-most ever by a Trojans in a single season. His 5.3 assist average was second among all Pac-12 players. He posted four games this season with nine or more assists, including matching a career high with 11 vs. Washington State on Feb. 7 when he added 10 points for his second career double-double. Fontan began his collegiate career at Fordham and registered his 1,000th career point when he scored 16 at California on Feb. 17.
Wise played only one season at USC after transfering from UC Irvine, but he made it a memorable one. The versatile forward led USC in scoring with an 11.9 average and also was second on the team with a 5.7 rebounds per game average. Wise started all 32 games for USC and scored in double figures 23 times. He also recorded three double-doubles. He was among the Trojans' top players not only in points and rebounds, but also was second on the team in steals (31), third in assists (55) and blocks (10) and fourth in three-pointers made (21).
Also receiving awards at tonight's banquet were Chass Bryan (Dr. James Zumberge Award for top GPA), Dewayne Dedmon (Bob Boyd Award as the top rebounder), Aaron Fuller (John Rudometkin Award for 110 percent effort), Fontan (Forrest F. Twogood Award as the top defensive player), Byron Wesley (Howard Jones Award as the most improved player), J.T. Terrell (Ryan Francis Award as an example of what being a Trojan is about) and Omar Oraby (Ernie Holbrook Award as the most inspirational).
