    Jan. 16, 2015

LOS ANGELES – Men’s basketball guard Julian Jacobs and women’s basketball guard Brianna Barrett were named USC Credit Union Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of Jan 5-11, on Friday, Jan. 16.

Jacobs led the Trojans to their first Pac-12 victory of the season over Cal. The sophomore captain scored 17 points and distributed the ball effectively to lead the team with five assists. Jacobs came up clutch especially in the second half, nailing in 10 points to maintain the Trojans double-digit lead in the 71-57 win over the Bears.

On Sunday against Stanford, Jacobs was back at it again, leading the team with 16 points and grabbing three rebounds. With the Trojans trailing by 13 late in the second half, Jacobs provided a late surge by bringing USC to within one. However, the Trojans wound up falling to the Cardinal, 78-76, with a last minute turnover. USC looks to continue their Pac-12 play with a road trip to Oregon to face the Ducks on Jan. 22 and the Oregon State Beavers on Jan. 24.

Also nominated for men’s student-athlete of the week honors: Alex Slaught (volleyball).

Barrett was the driving force for the Trojans in two big road wins over Colorado and Utah. Against the Buffaloes, Barrett came up big from the free-throw line, going 10-of-13 and finishing up with 17 points, six rebounds and four assists. USC ended up beating Colorado 81-61 in dominating fashion.

In Salt Lake City, Barrett was the only Trojan to finish in double digits with 13 points. The junior’s clutch performance proved critical in the tight 46-43 victory over Utah. The Women of Troy look to complete their road stretch on Jan. 18 against cross-town rival UCLA.

Also nominated for women’s student-athlete of the week honors: Andrea Kropp (swimming).

The USC Credit Union Student-Athletes of the Week are voted on by the student assistants and Sports Information Directors of the USC Sports Information Office. Nominations are compiled and distributed for voting by Alec Koondel. Student assistant voters include Rachel Dobrin, Dru Chavez, Colette Garcia, Melissa Martino, Andrew McKagan, Max Schwartz and intern Katie Ryan.
