    Trojans Romp in Home Opener

LOS ANGELES - USC Guard Larry Ayuso sparked a pulverizing 17-2 first-half run and the Trojans (3-1) romped to a home-opening victory, 90-76 over UCSB.

Ayuso pumped in 11 of the 17, turning a one-point lead into a comfortable 41-23 halftime cushion. He finsihed with 18.

For SC, forward Gary Williams topped all scorers with 19. Jarvis Turner scored 15. Guard Gary Johnson turned in a fine alla-round game with 13 points, 8 assists and 6 steals.

Ayuso also held Goucho star Raymond Tutt to 14 points, stopping at 12 a string of games in which he had scored over 20 points.

SC Coach Henry Bibby applied constant full-court and half-court zone pressure, forcing UCSB into 23 turnovers. On the strength of that defense, USC built a 27-point lead early in the second half .

Next, USC plays at San Diego State Saturday the 29th at 7:00.

    Quotes:
    USC Head Coach Henry Bibby
It's a young team, a real young team. We have a tendency to relax and not stay focused. It's the killer instinct we have to have.

We hold them to 23 at halftime, which is very, very good. In the second half they score 53...and our defense broke down.

I thought Ayuso kept us in the game. He can do that. And we have to have it. We talked to him tonight about letting the game come to him. And he played great defense on Tutt. At half, he had four points. Larry worked him hard.

    USC Guard Larry Ayuso
On hot first half- After I hit the first shot, the ball was coming off my hand good. And I thought, I've got to hit another one. I just got into a rythm. All shooters talk about getting into that rythm.

    UCSB Coach Jerry Pimm
Give the credit to USC. They dominated us early. They got after us aggressively. USC is going to be a good team. They blew it open early with good execution and good shooting.
