Junior guard Desmon Farmer scored 24 points and sophomore guard Errick Craven had 22 as the USC men's basketball team won its first exhibition game of the 2002-2003 season, 95-76, over the L.A. City All-Stars 2 in front of 357 at the Lyon Center on Saturday (Nov. 9).
The Trojans trailed 44-41 at the half and 59-50 early in the second half. But USC went on a 31-5 run - which included seven consecutive made three-point baskets at one point - to go ahead 81-64 with 5:33 to play.
First-year junior college transfer guard Roydell Smiley scored 17 points off the bench, sinking three consecutive three-point baskets during USC's second half run, the second of which gave the Trojans the lead for good at 63-62.
Sophomore forward Nick Curtis scored 14 points and had a team-high-tying eight rebounds with Farmer.
The Trojans forced 26 turnovers and had 13 steals, including four from Errick Craven and three from Farmer.
The L.A. City All-Stars were led by Derrick Anderson's 19 points, 15 of which came in the first half on five three-pointers without a miss.
"We shot the ball well during a certain stretch," seventh-year coach Henry Bibby said. "But we didn't have leadership, we didn't rebound and we didn't play man-to-man defense. Last year (at this time), I said we were a long ways away. This year, we're twice as far away."
