Junior forward Nikola Vucevic scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Cardinal team to a 39-29 victory in the annual Cardinal & Gold scrimmage held at the Galen Center today (Oct. 23). The short scrimmage was broken up into four 4-minute quarters.

"It went pretty well today," said USC head men's basketball coach Kevin O'Neill. "We practiced for two hours before, so I was pleased with what they did. We are going to be a better running team. They did a good job of running plays and we have guys with good natural instincts. Mo (Maurice Jones) has great natural instincts. We are already running stuff which is great."

Senior guard Donte Smith of the Gold team was high scorer, pouring in 20 points on 5-for-12 shooting, including hitting 4-for-8 from three-point range. Junior forward Aaron Fuller, who transfered to USC from Iowa and will have to sit out this season, was second on the Gold team in scoring with six points.

Senior guard Marcus Simmons was second in scoring on the Cardinal team with eight points. He also had three assists, two rebounds and zero turnovers. He was followed in scoring by senior forward Alex Stepheson (7 points, 5 rebounds), freshman guard Maurice Jones (6 points, 3 assists, 0 turnovers) and freshman guard Bryce Jones (5 points, 1 assist). Redshirt sophomore guard Tyler Sugiyama also played for the Cardinal squad and had zero points and one assist.

The freshmen made their presence felt right away as Maurice Jones hit a driving layup 14 seconds into the game, followed by a steal and a dunk by Bryce Jones to give the Cardinal team an early 4-0 lead. Fellow freshman forward Curtis Washington then followed a missed shot with a short jumper to give the Gold team its first points. Washington only played the first two minutes of the game as he is coming back from a groin injury. USC's other freshman forward Garrett Jackson did not play as he suffered a slight fracture in his nose at practice this week. He will see a doctor on Tuesday to see if he will be able to return to practice on Wednesday.

One other Trojan sidelined for the game was junior transfer Jio Fontan. The guard has experienced some soreness in the rib cage area and was held out for precautionary reasons.

The Gold team cut the lead to five points in the fourth quarter at 30-25 when Donte Smith hit his final three-pointer, but Simmons responded with a layup and an assist on a dunk for Stepheson to put the game away.

USC will host Point Loma Nazarene in an exhibition game at the Galen Center on Nov. 6 at 2 p.m.
