USC Men's Basketball Goes Down to Stanford 83-59
Nationally ranked Cardinal have everything clicking in Trojan defeat.
Feb. 14, 1998
LOS ANGELES- USC played perhaps its best half of the season, but couldn't contain the inside-outside tandem of Arthur Lee and Tim Young in the second half and lost 83 - 59 to #13 Stanford in front of 2,014 at the L.A Spors Arena.
For the Trojans, Gary Williams scored 18 points and promising freshman guard Kevin Augustine added 13 points and 5 assists while playing all 40 minutes.
Sparked by Augustine's explosive drives to the basket, SC (7-15 3-9) carved out an impressive five-point lead, 20-15, midway through the first half. They trailed by only 2, 33-31, at halftime.
But right away in the second half Stanford took control. Lee totaled a game-high 23 and Young, a 7-foot center, scored 19.
The Trojans have no player taller than 6-8 and Stanford has 6 players 6-8 or taller. Yet SC leads the Pac-10 in blocked shots and tonight rejected 6 more tonight. Reserve forward Shannon Swillis had 3 blocked shots.
The Men of Troy host rival UCLA Wednesday at 7:30.Quotes:
USC Coach Henry Bibby-
"We played as well as we could in the first half. We played as a team. They shot 32-percent in the first half and I thought it was because of our defense.
Kevin Augustine was very good. He played a heady game. I don't think there's any freshmen in the conference playing as many minutes (all 40 tonight) and as effectively. You can't get any better than a 40 minute effort. Next year these minutes are going to pay off. This is a building process"Stanford Coach Mike Montgomery-
"USC is not that far away. With those young kids, it's hard to sustain for 40 minutes. But they're having good stretches of basketball."USC Guard Kevin Augustine-
"I took it upon myself to play hard. In the first half I played the way I'm capable. I looked to score and to played the way I did at Mater Dei (high school). I knew we were right there and had a chance to win. But right away in the second half we didn't match their intensity."Notes:
Coach Bibby did not dress guard Larry Ayuso because he missed a class. And he dressed but did not play guard Gary Johnson for "disciplinary reasons".
Bibby used his 16th different sarting line-up. It included three true freshman Augustine, Greg Lakey and Jeff Trepagnier.
