BREAKDOWN: Ryan Wetherell, a 5-foot-11, 175-pound redshirt junior guard adds to the Trojan mix at the point guard position. He is a speedy and tough competitor known for his hustle.
2008-09: Was diagnosed with an eye problem which caused blurring and had to redshirt this season. Began limited practice with the team at the end of January. Did play in the Cardinal & Gold Scrimmage before the season and had eight points, two assists and a steal. Had emergency surgery in May of 2008 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles to remove an abscess in his neck which was putting pressure on an artery in his throat which caused his chest to swell.
2007-08: Appeared in 15 games, totaling 56 minutes of action and scored five points. Was called into action as the backup point guard while Daniel Hackett was out of the lineup due to injury. Had a rebound, assist and steal in the opening loss to Mercer on Nov. 10. Scored his first points of the season and had a career-high two rebounds on Jan. 24 at Oregon State. Also grabbed two rebounds, had a career-best two assists and hit his first three-pointer of the season while playing a career-high 17 minutes vs. Oregon State on Feb. 23. Played in just two more games after that, March 1 at Arizona State and March 8 vs. Stanford.
2006-07: Appeared in 15 games and played a total of 49 minutes. Played a season-high 13 minutes in the win vs. Mississippi Valley State on Nov. 28, hitting two free throws and grabbing a rebound. Scored a season-best three points and had an assist and a steal in four minutes vs. Bethune-Cookman on Dec. 14 Had two points and two assists and played nine minutes in the win at Oregon State on Jan. 6. Scored in five of the first eight games in which he appeared. Scored a point in USC's 77-60 win vs. Arkansas in the first round of the NCAA tournament, making one of two free throws.
HIGH SCHOOL: Played three years of varsity basketball at Sir Winston Churchill High in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Was the starting point guard and was team MVP his senior season. Was awarded the Sir Winston Churchill Athlete of the Year his senior season. Earned a Calgary A Channel Player of the Month Award during his senior season. Averaged 30 points and eight assists a game. Helped lead his Junior Trojans club team to the provincial championship three years in a row, earning team MVP honors each year (2004-06). Wetherell's AAU coach was John Hegwood.
PERSONAL: Wetherell was born on Feb. 12, 1988. Is a Communications major at USC. Lists Michael Jordan as his biggest sports hero for his style of play, work ethic and for being the best to play the game.
