BREAKDOWN: DeMar DeRozan, 6-foot-7, 220-pound freshman forward, has shown tremendous athleticism, a quick first step and the ability to score. He is expected to make an immediate impact on the program.
HIGH SCHOOL: DeRozan was named a 2007-08 McDonald's All-American, 2007-08 Best in the West first team selection and second-leading vote getter, 2008 Parade All-American first team selection and an L.A. Times All-Star. Scored 10 points on 5-for-10 shooting for the West team which fell 107-102 at the McDonald's All-America game. DeRozan also won the Slam Dunk Competiton at the McDonald's All-America game, getting perfect scores on his last two dunks. In his final dunk labeled "tap the baby," he bounced the ball off the glass, tapped the board with one hand and dunked with the other. He was also named to USA TODAY's 2008 All-USA second team and invited to play in the Jordan Brand Classic at Madison Square Garden in New York, N.Y... Helped lead Team USA to a 98-78 win vs. the World Select Team at the 11th Annunal Nike Hoop Summit in Portland, Ore in April. He scored a team-high 17 points in the game. DeRozan shared the 2008 Southern California Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association I-AA Player of the Year honors, was named to the California All-State team and wasn named Moore League MVP. He was ranked as the 2008 No. 1 high school senior basketball player by Draft Express, No. 2 by HoopScoopOnline, No. 3 by Rivals.com, No. 4 by HoopsReport.com, No. 6 by ScoutHoops.com (No. 1 small forward), No. 6 in Sports Illustrated's Takkle Top 25 and No. 8 by ESPN.com. DeRozan averaged 29.2 points, 7.9 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 3.0 steals in leading Compton High to a 24-6 record and its second consecutive Moore League championship. Compton was ranked fourth in the final SCIBCA regular season poll and they reached the DI-AA quarterfinals where they lost 62-55 to No. 5 Santa Margarita, snapping a 14-game winning streak. DeRozan scored 30 or more points 12 times, with a high game of 47 in a 100-88 win vs. Gahr on Dec. 27. He led Compton back from an 11-point deficit with 1:22 left with a scoring outburst of 16-straight points in a 74-73 win vs. J. Serra on Dec. 15. He finished with 45 points in the win. Five times he recorded double-figures in rebounds, with a game high of 18 vs. Jordan High on Dec. 17...As a junior, DeRozan averaged 22.3 points, 7.8 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 3.2 steals per game to lead Compton to a 26-7 record and the Moore League championship. As a sophomore he averaged 22.6 points and 8.4 rebounds per game and scored 26.1 points and grabbed 8.4 rebounds per game as a freshman.
PERSONAL: DeRozan was born on Aug. 7, 1989 in Compton, Calif. He is an undeclared major at USC. His parents are Frank and Diane...His father told the Long Beach Press-Telegram that when DeMar was 10 he started doing 10 toe raises on each of the steps (15 of them) that led upstairs in their house, as well as squats, sit-ups and push-ups before going to bad, without anyone telling him to do it. DeRozan first dunked a basketball in the sixth grade.
