LOS ANGELES - Trojan alum Mike O'Neill was named to the St. Louis Cardinals 40-man roster, the club recently announced.

O'Neill, who will enter his fifth season of professional ball in 2014, split time last season between the Double-A Springfield Cardinals, before being advanced to the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds. In 98 games at Springfield, the Riverside, Calif., native hit .320 with 35 RBI and two home runs. An on-base machine, O'Neill tallied 71 walks in his 359 at-bats and led the team with an impressive on-base percentage of .431. He also stole 18 bases--just one less than his 2012 season total. O'Neill finished out the season with the Triple-A ballclub, batting .295 with 20 walks and an on-base percentage of .402.

He played four seasons at USC (2007-2010) and finished his Trojan career with a batting average of .320 and an on-base percentage of .407. He drove in 50 runs with six home runs and 23 doubles. His best season was his senior season in 2010, where he batted .344, drove in 25 runs, hit three home runs and finished with an on-base percentage of .413, en route to All Pac-10 honorable mention honors. After his stellar career at Troy, O'Neill was drafted by the Cardinals in the 31st round of the 2010 MLB First-Year Player's Draft.

At the end of the 2013 season, nine Trojans were active in the big leagues: pitchers Ian Kennedy and Brad Boxberger (Padres), Tommy Milone and Ryan Cook (A's), Barry Zito (Giants-free agent) and J.P. Howell (Dodgers); outfielders Lucas Duda (Mets), Nick Buss (Dodgers); and infielder Grant Green (Angels).
