LOS ANGELES - The defending national champion USC baseball team, ranked 14th nationally, will face Virginia Commonwealth in the first round as it hosts a four-team NCAA Regional this weekend (May 28-30) at Dedeaux Field, the NCAA announced today. The other first-round matchup features No. 12 Pepperdine and Harvard.

The second-seeded Trojans (33-23) and the third-seeded Rams (40-18) will meet on Friday (May 28) at 3 p.m., followed by the top-seeded Waves (43-14) against the fourth-seeded Crimson (28-18) at 7 p.m. The weekend's complete schedule is listed below.

"As we knew it would be, this is a strong regional with some outstanding teams," USC Coach Mike Gillespie said. "There will certainly be an added electricity because Pepperdine, a local team, is the No. 1 seed."

Pepperdine head coach Frank Sanchez is a former USC assistant coach. USC and VCU met in the NCAA Regionals last season at Clemson, with the Rams winning, 14-4.

The winner of this double-elimination tournament will move on to a "super regional" the following weekend (June 4-6) at a site to be determined for the right to advance to the College World Series.

A tournament pass, good for every game, costs $50 for adults and $30 for university students and children under 12. Single-game tickets on Friday and Saturday are $10 for adults and $7 for university students and children under 12. Sunday's single-game tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for university students and children under 12. Tickets can be purchased by calling the USC Ticket Office at (213) 740-GOSC.

USC - or any Southern California school - has not hosted an NCAA Regional since 1991.
