LOS ANGELES - Junior lefthander Barry Zito earned Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week and Pacific-10 Conference Pitcher of the Week honors on Monday following his 16-strikeout, two-hit complete-game victory over UCLA last weekend.
It was the second time Zito has won both honors this season.
Zito struck out 16 batters for the third time this season in a 4-1 victory over the Bruins on April 30. Sixteen strikeouts are the most by a Trojan pitcher since at least 1987 (as far back as USC single-game records currently go). After giving up two hits and the only run in the second inning, he no-hit the Bruins over the last seven innings. He struck out at least one batter every inning.
Zito has now won nine straight starts and improved to 7-0 after seven Pac-10 starts. Overall, he is 10-2 with a 3.30 ERA and has 132 strikeouts in 90 innings while holding opponents to a .220 batting average.
USC next plays at San Diego State on Tuesday (May 4) at 5 p.m., then takes nine days off for finals.
