Sean Silva Earns First-Career Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week Honors|
April 15, 2013
LOS ANGELES - Junior left-handed pitcher Sean Silva has been named Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week for April 8-14, the Pac-12 Conference office announced Monday.
In just his second career start last Friday vs. then-No. 15 Arizona State, Silva (Fresno, Calif./Fresno City College) threw six complete innings, allowing only one hit while striking out a career-high four batters in a 5-0 victory. The junior issued one walk and retired 18 of 22 batters he faced en route to earning his first career victory. He combined with freshman righty Brent Wheatley (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) - who did not allow a hit in three innings of relief - to toss the first Trojan one-hitter since 1996. That one-hitter came from a combined four Trojan pitchers in a 20-0 victory over Cal Lutheran.
In eight appearances (two starts) in 2013, Silva has struck out 12 batters and held opponents to a .258 batting average.
This is Silva's first career Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week honor and USC's 63rd selection all-time.
Silva and the Trojans will head back out to the diamond tomorrow, travelling to Loyola Marymount for a 3 p.m. PT contest.
