LONG BEACH, Calif. - In the final fall scrimmage, USC baseball outhit Long Beach State, but fell 4-3 in nine innings on Saturday afternoon.

The Trojans and Dirtbags played a total of 14 innings on the day, but started the day with a full nine-inning scrimmage.

The 2013 weekend rotation of lefty Bob Wheatley (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS), righty Wyatt Strahan (Villa Park, Calif./Villa Park HS) and lefty Kyle Twomey (Placentia, Calif./El Dorado HS) each threw two innings in the game, along with righty reliever Kyle Davis (Garden Grove, Calif./Pacifica HS). Strahan led the way with a hitless two innings of work, allowing only one walk and striking out one.

The Trojan offense tallied 10 hits to the Dirtbags' eight, with Dante Flores (Norwalk, Calif./St. John Bosco HS), Blake Lacey (Clovis, Calif./Clovis HS) and AJ Ramirez (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield Christian HS) leading the way with two hits apiece. Ramirez and centerfielder Omar Cotto Lozada (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Bonneville School) each drove in runs on the day. The Trojans also plated a run on a wild pitch. After falling down 1-0 in the bottom of the second, the Trojans scored in the top of the third to tie things up as Ramirez led off with a double, was advanced to third on a groundout by Garrett Stubbs (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) and came home on a groundout by Cotto Lozada.

The Trojans took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth as Flores led off with a single and took advantage of wild pitches, advancing to second on one, moving over the third on dropped third strike strikeout and coming home on another wild pitch by the Dirtbags' Ryan Millison.

The Dirtbags took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth after they plated two runs. In the top of the eighth the Trojans tied things up as Jeremy Martinez (Fountain Valley, Calif./Mater Dei HS) led off the inning with a single, was bunted over the third by Kevin Swick (La Canada, Calif./Loyola HS) and a single from Lacey put the tying run on third. Ramirez then singled to bring in the run, but the tie game would be short-lived, as the Dirtbags took the lead back with a run in the bottom of the eighth. The Trojans had a chance in the top of the ninth, but were unable to plate the run.

The Trojans sent a quartet of lefties to the mound in the extra innings, including sophomores Sean Alder (Northridge, Calif./Sierra Canyon HS) and Marc Huberman (Los Angeles, Calif./Hamilton HS) and freshmen Bernardo Flores (Baldwin Park, Calif./Baldwin Park HS) and Andrew Wright (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS). Right-hander Brent Wheatley (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) also saw action.

The Trojans open up the 2014 campaign on Friday, February 14 as they host Northwestern at 6 p.m. PT.
