Nov. 18, 2012
LOS ANGELES - In the final game of the Cardinal and Gold series, the Cardinal team evened things up at one game apiece as they defeated Gold, 19-0, in a 12-inning scrimmage at Dedeaux Field on Sunday afternoon.
Freshman outfielder Timmy Robinson (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View HS) led the way with five hits for three RBIs and also scored five of the team's 19 runs. Overall, the Cardinal team had 21 hits and six different players with multi-hit days. Jake Hernandez (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Los Osos HS) finished with four hits and two RBIs.
The Cardinal team took a 4-0 lead in the top of the third and never looked back. Robinson and Kevin Swick (La Canada, Calif./Loyola HS) delivered RBI singles in the inning, while James Roberts (Cupertino, Calif./Archbishop Mitty HS) doubled to drive in runs for the Cardinal team. The team also took advantage of a fielding error to extend the inning and drive in the runs, as three of the four runs in the inning were unearned.
On the mound for the Cardinal squad, starter Matt Munson (Irvine, Calif./Saddleback HS), Brooks Kriske (Palm Desert, Calif./Palm Desert HS), Nick Berhel (Benecia, Calif./De La Salle HS), Brent Wheatley (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS), Kyle Richter (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita HS) and Marc Huberman (Los Angeles, Calif./Hamilton HS) combined to hold the Gold squad scoreless and to a combined five hits through 12 innings.
The Cardinal team added two more runs in the fifth on RBI singles from Hernandez and David Edson (Las Vegas, Nev./Faith Lutheran HS), one in the seventh, six in the eighth, two in the 11th and four in the 12th inning to give itself the final19-run margin of victory.
The Trojans have concluded fall practice and will begin preparations for the spring season in 2013, with the season opener set for Friday, Feb. 15 at Cal State Fullerton.
