Gold Squad Breaks Through in Late Innings to Take Game One of Series Over Cardinal, 5-1
Nov. 16, 2012
LOS ANGELES - Both the Cardinal and Gold teams looked evenly matched through the first eight innings, until the Gold team broke things open in the top of the ninth with a home run from left fielder Dante Flores and added three more runs in the top of the 10th inning to take the first game of the two-game Cardinal vs. Gold split-squad scrimmage at Dedeaux Field on Friday afternoon.
Both the Gold squad's starter Wyatt Strahan (Villa Park, Calif./Villa Park HS) and the Cardinal team's starter Bob Wheatley (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) only gave up one hit apiece through the first four innings. Both starters finished with one earned run and left with no decisions, as Strahan threw 5.0 innings, only allowing two hits and one unearned run. Wheatley finished with only three hits allowed through 4.1 innings of work, with one earned run to his credit.
The visiting Gold team got on the board first, as members of the freshman class really made their mark. Freshman first baseman Kyle Davis (Garden Grove, Calif./Pacifica HS) singled to left centerfield to start off the inning. Fellow freshman Andre Ramirez (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield Christian HS) laid down a solid sacrifice bunt to move Davis to second. Another freshman would once again deliver for the Gold team, as second baseman Blake Lacey (Clovis, Calif./Clovis HS) came through with a RBI single up the middle to score Davis and give the team a 1-0 lead.
The Cardinal squad answered the bell, however, as shortstop James Roberts (Cupertino, Calif./Archbishop Mitty HS) reached on an error to lead off the inning. Freshman outfielder Vahn Bozoian (Chino Hills, Calif./Ayala HS) delivered the sacrifice bunt to move Roberts into scoring position. That set the table for another freshman, outfielder Timmy Robinson (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View HS) to come through with a double to left center to score Roberts and tie the game up at 1-1.
Wheatley of the Cardinal squad was relieved by freshman lefty Kyle Twomey (Placentia, Calif./El Dorado HS), who threw 3.2 innings of shutout ball until Flores (Norwalk, Calif./St. John Bosco HS) hammered a solo home run to right field to lead off the top of the ninth inning and gave the Gold team the 2-1 lead. Freshman right-hander Shane Gonzales (Temecula, Calif./Great Oak HS) entered in the sixth inning for the Gold team and threw four complete shutout innings, only allowing two hits.
In the top of the 10th inning, the Gold team piled on three insurance runs, as redshirt senior outfielder Greg Zebrack (Northridge, Calif./UPenn) collected an RBI base hit and the Gold squad took advantage of defensive mistakes by the Cardinal team to push across the runs.
In the bottom of the 10th, sophomore Nigel Nootbaar (El Segundo, Calif./El Segundo HS) threw a flawless inning with two strikeouts to preserve the victory for the Gold team.
The Cardinal and Gold teams will be back in action on Sunday, Nov. 18 at 12 a.m. for the final game of the two-game series at Dedeaux Field.
