FULLERTON, Calif. – The Trojans fought back to defeat host Cal State Fullerton 2-1 on Tuesday evening at Goodwin Field, completing the first series sweep of the Titans since 2008.

The Trojans (26-27, 13-14 Pac-12) tallied two runs on seven hits, riding the second-straight strong Tuesday start from freshman Marrick Crouse (Dana Point, Calif./Dana Hills HS).

Crouse went five innings, allowing the Titans just one run on five hits, with three walks and a career-high five strikeouts. He left the game down 1-0 after giving up one run in the fifth inning.

The Trojans fought back from the 1-0 deficit to plate two runs in the seventh inning. After starter Blake Quinn was lifted, the Trojans had success against new pitcher Maxwell Gibbs. After Jeremy Martinez (Fountain Valley, Calif./Mater Dei HS) drew a leadoff walk and Corey Dempster (South Pasadena, Calif./Loyola HS) singled, the Titans went back to the pen for Miles Chambers. Frankie Rios (Lakewood, Calif./Long Beach Poly HS) singled to left field and Martinez was waved around from second. He was cut down at the plate, but the Titans’ catcher blocked the plate and Martinez was ruled safe due to the new plate blocking rules.

The Trojans added another run as Dempster advanced to third on a wild pitch and Brandon Perez (Ladera Ranch, Calif./Mater Dei HS) went first-pitch swinging with two down, singling to left field to plate the go-ahead run.

Now pitching with a lead, CJ Stubbs (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS), who threw flawless sixth and seventh innings, put up another zero in the eighth inning.

The Trojans brought in Jeff Paschke (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara HS) to shut things down in the ninth, and despite walking one, he did just that, collecting his fourth save of the year.

Stubbs earned the win to advance to 2-1 on the season.

The Trojans will be back in action on Friday, as they travel to Arizona State for a three-game Pac-12 series starting on May 27 at 7 p.m. PT.
