LOS ANGELES - The No. 15 USC Trojans finished off the regular season with a big 6-3 statement win vs. No. 16 Arizona State at Dedeaux Field on Saturday afternoon, giving the Trojans their best regular season record (37-19) since 2001.
The Trojans (37-19, 18-12 Pac-12) finished in a three-way tie for third in the conference with the Sun Devils (34-21, 18-12 Pac-12) and California.
The Trojans celebrated the careers of four seniors in their final home game at Dedeaux Field - Omar Cotto Lozada (San Juan, Puerto Rico/The Bonneville School), Dante Flores (Norwalk, Calif./St. John Bosco HS), Angelo La Bruna (La Canada, Calif./Duke) and Garrett Stubbs (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS).
Bobby Stahel (Needles, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) led the way for the Trojans, going 2-for-4 with a big three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning that proved to be the difference in the three-run game. He also capped off the game with a huge diving catch in left center field for the final out of the top of the ninth inning.
The Sun Devils jumped out to a 2-0 lead with two sac flies through the first three frames. In the bottom of the fourth, the Trojans jumped on the board as Dante Flores (Norwalk, Calif./St. John Bosco HS), on his senior day, came through with an RBI ground out.
In the fifth inning, the Trojans mounted a two-out rally, as AJ Ramirez (Phoenix, Ariz./Bakersfield Christian HS) singled through the left side. Reggie Southall (Inglewood, Calif./Serra HS) walked to set the table for Stahel, who took the 0-2 pitch over the left field wall for his fifth home run of the year, giving the Trojans the 4-2 lead.
The Sun Devils added one more in the top of the sixth off reliever Tyler Gilbert (Felton, Calif./Santa Barbara City College), who threw 2.2 innings of three-hit, one run ball with three strikeouts. Trever Allen came through with a 2-out single to make the score 4-3.
The Trojan pitchers shut things down through the final three frames, as Brooks Kriske (Palm Desert, Calif./Palm Desert HS) threw one scoreless inning and Marc Huberman (Los Angeles, Calif./Hamilton HS) threw 2.1 innings scoreless for his fourth save of the year.
The Trojan offense added two more insurance runs in the seventh inning, as Flores had an RBI single and then the sixth run was walked in by Sun Devil reliever Brett Lilek.
The Trojans will find out where they will land in an NCAA Regional at 9 a.m. PT tomorrow (Monday) as the selection show is televised live on ESPNU.
