May 23, 2015
LOS ANGELES - The No. 15 Trojan offense came to life on Saturday in a key Pac-12 match vs. No. 16 Arizona State, defeating the Sun Devils 7-4 to even the series on Saturday afternoon.
The Trojans (35-19, 16-12 Pac-12) were led by a Dante Flores (Norwalk, Calif./St. John Bosco HS), who broke open the game in the seventh inning with a huge bases-clearing triple. Timmy Robinson (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View HS) and David Oppenheim (Mercer Island, Wash./College of the Canyons) both came through with some clutch hits, driving in two runs apiece in the victory.
Trojan starter Kyle Twomey (Placentia, Calif./El Dorado HS) went five complete innings, allowing two runs on seven hits, with four walks and two strikeouts in the no-decision. Brent Wheatley (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) entered in a big spot with runners on the corners and no outs in the top of the sixth inning, but was able to minimize the damage and pitched outstanding in four innings of relief, allowing two runs on four hits with one walk and four strikeouts to earn his fourth victory of the year.
The Trojans scored one off Sun Devil (34-20, 18-11 Pac-12) starter Ryan Kellogg in the bottom of the first, as Trojans put runners on the corners with one out and Robinson delivered a sac fly to make it a 1-0 game.
That lead held up through the next four frames, until the Sun Devils took a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth off a solo home run by Joey Bielek and a sac fly RBI from Andrew Snow off reliever Wheatley. The junior settled in to minimize the damage.
The Trojans answered right back in the bottom of the sixth with two more runs of their own. Robinson blasted a solo home run, his second in back-to-back games to tie the game at 2-2. The 2-out hit parade then started for the Trojans, as Blake Lacey (Clovis, Calif./Clovis HS) started it off with a double to right center. Oppenheim then came up with an RBI single up the middle to plate Lacey and give the Trojans the 3-2 lead.
The back-and-forth game continued, as the Sun Devils tied things back up in the top of the seventh when a double right inside the third base bag by Coby Woodmansee brought home Trever Allen from first, who singled in the previous at bat.
The Trojans broke the game open in the seventh inning, however, as they touched up the Sun Devils for four runs as they used four different pitchers in the inning. With one out, Garrett Stubbs (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) singled up the middle and Martinez drew a walk to put two on. That was the end of the day for Kellogg, as the Sun Devils brought in their closer, Ryan Burr. Robinson drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases for Flores, who hammered the 0-1 pitch into center field, past the diving Johnny Sewald for a bases-clearing triple that put the Trojans up 6-3. Reliever David Graybill entered to face Lacey who drew a walk. With runners on the corners, the Sun Devils again went to the pen, this time to lefty reliever Tucker Baca to face left-handed hitting Oppenheim. Oppenheim singled the first offering from Baca right back up the middle to plate Flores and give the Trojans the 7-3 lead.
The Sun Devils were down to their last strike in the top of the ninth when Allen went yard, putting the score at 7-4. Wheatley was able to finally record the last out and give the Trojans the 7-4 win.
The rubber match of the series and the final game of the regular season is set for 3 p.m. PT tomorrow (Sunday) at Dedeaux Field.
