USC Wins Again At Cal, 14-4|
May 23, 2009
BERKELEY, Calif. - Freshman outfielder Alex Sherrod (Marietta, Ga./Walton HS) went 4-for-5 with one RBI while junior shortstop Grant Green (Anaheim Hills/Canyon HS) was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two stolen bases Saturday as the USC Trojans took their second straight game from the California Golden Bears in the 14-4 decision. The Trojans used a six-run first inning to knock out Cal starter Kevin Miller after recording only one out.
USC is now 28-27 on the season, 13-13 in Pac-10 play while Cal falls to 23-29 overall, 8-18 in conference.
Joe De Pinto, Green and Ricky Oropesa loaded the bases in the first with consecutive singles before Anthony Vasquez hit a two-run single to open the single. Hector Rabago followed with a single to left, advancing on a fielding error by Danny Oh as two more runs scored. Brandon Garcia singled and a wild pitch advanced the runners. Billy Pinkerton grounded out to the right side for the fifth run and Sherrod recorded the RBI single as USC staked starter Brad Boxberger to a six-run lead in perhaps his final start as a Trojan.
Boxberger allowed four runs on seven hits in six innings of work for the Trojans.
Cal cut the lead to 7-4 in the fifth on Oh's solo home run, but the Trojans jumped on the Golden Bears' pitching staff with two runs in the sixth, three in the seventh and two in the eighth to earn the series win.
The season finale for both teams will be tomorrow at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
