May 22, 2015
LOS ANGELES - The No. 15 USC Trojans got into an early hole and were never able to dig out of it, falling 11-3 to visiting No. 16 Arizona State on Friday night at Dedeaux Field.
The Sun Devils (34-19, 18-10 Pac-12) put up five on Trojan (35-19, 16-12 Pac-12) starter Kyle Davis (Garden Grove, Calif./Pacifica HS), due in part to a three-run home run by Colby Woodmansee and a solo shot by Joey Bielek. Woodmansee led the Sun Devils with a 3-for-5 day at the plate, driving in a team-high four RBI.
Davis settled in for the Trojans over the next five frames, not allowing another run. He finished the day with six strikeouts in six innings of work, three walks and five runs on eight hits.
The Trojan offense was led by Dante Flores (Norwalk, Calif./St. John Bosco HS) who was 2-for-3 with a solo home run in the sixth inning that at the time pulled the Trojans within 2, 5-3. Timmy Robinson (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View HS) also hit a solo home run for the Trojans, his coming in the second inning. The Trojans also put up one in the fourth on a sac fly from Blake Lacey (Clovis, Calif./Clovis HS).
5-3 was as close as the Trojans would get, however, as the Sun Devils put up one in the seventh, three in the eighth and two in the ninth against Trojan relievers Tyler Gilbert (Felton, Calif./Santa Barbara City College), Brooks Kriske (Palm Desert, Calif./Palm Desert HS) and Brad Wegman (Temecula, Calif./Great Oak HS) to put the game out of reach, 11-3.
The Trojans and Sun Devils will meet for game two of the series tomorrow (Saturday) at 4 p.m. PT at Dedeaux Field.
