IRVINE, Calif. - Behind the strong pitching of reliever James Guillen and the USC offense that plated six runs on nine hits, the Trojans defeated UC Irvine 6-4 on Tuesday evening at Anteater Ballpark.

Guillen (Covina, Calif./Damien HS) was impressive for the Trojans, entering in the bottom of the fifth with the Trojans holding on to a 4-2 lead and never looked back, only allowing one run on one hit through five complete innings. The junior righty also struck out three.

At the plate, the Trojan offensive presence was found throughout the order, as four different Trojans had multi-hit games. Adam Landecker (Calabasas, Calif./Calabasas HS), Greg Zebrack (Northridge, Calif./UPenn), Timmy Robinson (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View HS) and Bobby Stahel (Needles, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) all had two hits on the day, while Zebrack led the way with two RBIs.

After scheduled starter Sean Silva (Fresno, Calif./Fresno City College) was a late scratch due to illness, freshman righty Brooks Kriske (Palm Desert, Calif./Palm Desert HS) stepped in for his second start of the season. He only made it through one inning, giving up two runs on three hits, while walking one.

In the second inning, righty Kyle Davis (Garden Grove, Calif./Pacifica HS) entered and threw three solid innings, allowing one run, that came in the second inning, on three hits, while striking out three.

After Anteater starter Evan Brock held the Trojans down through the first four innings, the Trojans got to reliever Kyle Hooper in the top of the fifth. The patient Garrett Stubbs (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS), who drew two walks on the day worked one here to load the bases. The Trojans plated their first run of the inning on a wild pitch, as all the runners advanced 90 feet. Then with one out, James Roberts (Cupertino, Calif./Archbishop Mitty HS) then drew a walk to load the bases. That set the stage for a big double by Zebrack, that scored two and put runners at second and third, still only one out. Kevin Swick (La Canada, Calif./Loyola HS) connected on a sac fly to center field to put the Trojans up, 4-3.

In the seventh inning, the Trojans added two more runs to extend their lead, as Stubbs drew his second walk of the lead. Landecker singled through the left side and the ball got past the left fielder for a two-base error, that plated Stubbs and put Landecker at third. Roberts followed with a single of his own to drive in the Trojans' sixth run of the day.

The Anteaters scored in the seventh after a leadoff triple came back to haunt the Trojans, as the run was plated on an RBI groundout. Guillen shut things down after the run scored, however, inducing a pop up and getting an inning-ending 4-3 groundout.

Guillen then put up zeroes in the eighth and ninth inning to preserve the 6-4 win for the Trojans.

The Trojans will head to Arizona to face the Wildcats in a three-game series in Tucson, Ariz., starting on Friday at 6 p.m.
