CORVALLIS, Ore. - Ben Mount held on for the save with the tying run at second in the bottom of the ninth Sunday as the USC Trojans held on for the 4-3 victory over the No. 2 Oregon State Beavers as the Trojans won the Pac-10 Conference series, two games to one. Logan Odom earned the win for USC (22-29, 12-12) with 6 1/3 innings, giving up just two runs on five hits with three walks and eight strikeouts.
Josh Osich took the loss for Oregon State (38-14, 17-7) after giving up three runs (two earned) in 5 2/3 innings on six hits. Osich walked four and struck out five as the Beavers suffered their first conference series loss this season. Both teams stranded 10 runners on the afternoon with the Beavers having a runner at third in three innings, but failing to score each time.
Matt Foat put the Trojans ahead with a solo shot off Osich in the second, his first home run of the season. Andrew Susac walked to lead off the fourth and scored on Ryan Dunn's double to right center.
With two outs in the fifth, Adam Landecker singled to right and a fielding error by Ryan Barnes allowed him to move to second. Joe De Pinto then followed with a double to the game as the Trojans retook the lead. The Trojans were able to manufacture another run with two away in the sixth. James Roberts singled to right, followed by a walk to designated hitter Kevin Swick. J.R. Aguirre then singled to left for a two-run lead. Oregon State put runners at second and third with an out in the fifth before Odom struck out Kavin Keyes. After a walk to Susac loaded the bases, Odom got Jared Norris looking as another strikeout left the bases loaded.
Brian Stamps and Barnes hit back-to-back doubles in the seventh to make it 3-2, but Kyle Richter came in to relieve Odom and recorded two outs to keep the Trojans ahead.
In the top of the ninth, the Trojans loaded the bases and scored what proved to be the winning run when Ricky Oropesa hit a sacrifice fly to center. Michael Miller and Stamps led off the ninth with walks against Mount for the Beavers. Barnes sacrificed both runners and Keyes hit a sacrifice fly to center to cut the deficit to one, but Susac hit a ground ball to short as Oropesa was able to dig out the one-hopper from Roberts to hand the series win to the Trojans.
