CORVALLIS, Ore. - Jared Norris was 3-for-3 with a triple and a home run while Sam Gaviglio improved to 11-1 on the season Friday as the No. 2 Oregon State Beavers defeated the USC Trojans, 7-2, in the first game of a Pac-10 Conference series. Brian Stamps clubbed his first career home run for the Beavers (38-12, 17-5) with a three-run shot in the seventh.

The win spoiled the debut of Frank Cruz as the official head coach of the Trojans after USC athletic director Pat Haden named Cruz the full-time baseball coach yesterday morning. The Trojans fell to 20-29 overall, 10-12 in conference.

Andrew Triggs (4-4), who entered the game with a 1.11 ERA in his last four starts, allowed four runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings.

With Alex Sherrod at third base in the second, James Roberts hit a line drive off Gaviglio's glove and beat out the throw for the 1-0 lead. Norris then hit a 3-2 pitch off Triggs to lead off the bottom half of the second to tie the game at 1-1. Kevin Roundtree singled in the top of the third and advanced to second on Adam Landecker's sacrifice. A passed ball charged to Andrew Susac moved Roundtree to third and scored on Ricky Oropesa's sacrifice fly. Oregon State came back again in the third with two runs, taking the lead for good at 3-2 when Carter Bell hit an RBI double to left, followed by Norris' triple to left center.

Oregon State turned three double plays in the game. The Beavers would add a run in the fourth before Stamps' blast off Chris Mezger.

The series continues tomorrow at 2:05 p.m. with a 12:05 p.m. start on Sunday. Both games will be broadcast live (audio only) on with Saturday's game against Oregon State televised on ROOT Sports.
