    No. 21/20 USC Splits Notre Dame Series With 9-3 Win

    SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Junior center fielder Darin Vieira went 3-for-5 with three RBI Wednesday as the No. 21/20 USC Trojans split its two-game series with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in a 9-3 victory. The Trojans jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the eighth.

    Sophomore pitcher Josh Fogel (Saugus/Saugus HS) earned his first collegiate victory with three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit with no walks and six strikeouts. Fogel, who started the season as the team's backup catcher, was converted to a relief pitching role midway through the season.

    USC is now 33-16 on the season while Notre Dame falls to 30-22-1 overall.

    Junior designated hitter Baron Frost broke a scoreless tie in the sixth when he led off with his third home run of the season to left. Matt Cusick reached on an error by Notre Dame second baseman Ross Brezovsky and advanced to third on a single by Hector Estrella. Mike Dury replaced ND starter Wade Korpi and threw a wild pitch, which moved Estrella to second. Vieira then delivered a two-run single to left for a 3-0 USC lead.

    The Trojans loaded the bases in the seventh. Vieira hit an infield single to score Jeff Clement. Cusick then scored when a balk was called against Fighting Irish reliever Jess Stewart, followed by a two-run double down the left field line by pinch hitter Zack Kalter.

    Freshman Lucas Duda hit a two-run double to left center in the eighth for a 9-0 lead. Notre Dame scored its first run in the eighth on an RBI single by Sean Gaston, plating Craig Cooper. Cooper hit a two-run double in the ninth off USC's Paul Koss.

     

     

    Brett Bannister and Anthony Encinas both threw two scoreless innings to start the game for the Trojans.

    USC travels tomorrow to Corvallis, Ore., for a Pac-10 Conference series with No. 3/5 and Pac-10 Conference leader Oregon State, beginning on Friday (May 20) at 5 p.m. Pacific. The series continues on Saturday (May 21) at 1 p.m. and Sunday (May 22) at noon. All three games will be broadcast live, along with Gametracker live stats, on usctrojans.com.
