Pepperdine Defeats USC, 7-4, In Nonconference Action|

MALIBU, Calif. - Luke Salas and Steve Kleen had two hits each while both scoring twice as the Pepperdine Waves defeated the USC Trojans, 7-4, in nonconference action at Eddy D. Field Stadium. The Trojans stranded 12 runners, including the bases loaded in the fourth, as the Waves pushed three runs across in the fifth and held onto the lead.
Pepperdine improves to 24-29 on the season while USC falls to 22-28 overall.
Mike Craig (1-0) earned the win with 3 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing two hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
USC second baseman Blake Sharpe went 3-for-5 with three doubles and an RBI.
After Salas walked in the fifth for Pepperdine, Kleen scored Salas after doubling down the left field line to tie the game at 3-3. Catcher Chad Tracy was walked intentionally to put runners at first and second and Cory Brightwell put the Waves ahead with an RBI single to left.
With two outs in the sixth, Salas hit an RBI double to right to score Nick Kliebert. Kleen and designated hitter Brent Lewis hit back-to-back RBI singles to make it a 7-3 lead for the Waves.
Joey Metropoulos scored in the ninth when Kleen, who started the ninth as a reliever, was called for a balk to complete the scoring.
The Trojans travel to No. 1 Stanford for a Pac-10 Conference series, starting on Friday (May 21) at 6 p.m. and continuing on Saturday (May 22) and Sunday (May 23) at 1 p.m. All three games will be broadcast live, along with Gametracker live stats, on usctrojans.com.
