No. 15 USC Drops Back-and-Forth Affair to No. 22 California 7-5|
May 17, 2015
BERKELEY, Calif. - In what was a back-and-forth affair, the No. 15 Trojans could not complete the comeback, falling 7-5 to host No. 22 California at Evans Diamond on Sunday afternoon.
The Trojans (36-17, 16-10) took an early 2-0 lead as they put starter Ryan Mason under in the first two innings. Garrett Stubbs (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) had a one-out double and was brought home by the hot-hitting Jeremy Martinez (Fountain Valley, Calif./Mater Dei HS) in the first and then in the second, Bobby Stahel (Needles, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) delivered the sac fly to make it 2-0.
However, the Bears answered with a three-run second inning to take a 3-2 lead. That didn't last long, however, as the Trojans answered with another run of their own in the top of the third as Blake Lacey (Clovis, Calif./Clovis HS) laid down the squeeze bunt.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Bears had a big two-out rally, as Chris Paul cleared the bases to score two after Drew Pearson had a two-out double and Lucas Ercig drew a walk.
The Trojans were trailing 5-2 until the seventh inning when they tied it back up as Flores delivered a sac fly and Lacey drove in his second run of the day on a single with two outs. The Trojans had two in scoring position with two down and AJ Ramirez (Phoenix, Ariz./Bakersfield Christian HS) at the plate, but he struck out to strand two.
The Bears answered with one in the eighth, the go-ahead run off reliever Tyler Gilbert (Felton, Calif./Santa Barbara City College), as Celsi delivered a double off the wall in left center to plate Paul and make the score 7-5.
The Trojans had some opportunities in the eighth but couldn't string together the hits and in the bottom half of the inning the Bears added one more insurance run to make it 7-5.
The rubber match of the series is set for 7 p.m. PT tomorrow (Monday) night at Evans Diamond.
