Trojans Battle Back For 10-8 Win Over No. 15 Washington

LOS ANGELES - Senior shortstop Michael Moon's three-run homer completed a five-run fifth inning Sunday as the USC Trojans earned a 10-8 win against the No. 15 Washington Huskies in Pac-10 Conference action at Dedeaux Field. The Trojans snapped a season-long, five-game losing streak as Moon went 2-for-5 with three RBI.
USC improves to 22-27 overall and 8-10 in Pac-10 play while Washington falls to 32-16-1 on the season and 14-7 in conference action.
Clayton Wentworth (5-2) and Josh Rummonds combined to allow only one unearned run in the final 4 1/3 innings. Rummonds threw two innings, allowing one hit to earn his fourth save of the season. After allowing a leadoff single in the ninth to left fielder Zach Clem, Rummonds induced a 4-6-3 double play by first baseman Kyle Larsen. Shortstop Nick Batkoski grounded to short to end the game and preserve the win for the Trojans.
Freshman Tim Lincecum (8-2) took the loss for the Huskies. allowing nine runs (four earned) on seven hits in five innings. He struck out five and walked five.
Lincecum struck out Moon to end the first and set a Washington school record with his 132nd strikeout of the season, surpassing the record of 131 held by Jeff Heaverlo. He now has 134 strikeouts on the season.
The Trojans jumped on Lincecum early with four runs in the first. With runners on first and third, the Trojans scored their first run on a Lincecum wild pitch to plate Moon. Second baseman Blake Sharpe hit a two-out, two-run single up the middle and Cyle Hankerd walked with the bases loaded for a 4-0 USC advantage.
Washington took a 6-4 lead in the fourth with five runs, capped by a three-run homer by right fielder Taylor Johnson with his fifth of the season. First baseman Kyle Larsen doubled in the fifth to knock out USC starter Michael Friedman. An error by Trojan third baseman Billy Hart allowed Batkoski to reach first base and the Huskies took advantage on Otness' two-run double to left center for a four-run lead.
USC answered in the fifth when Joey Metropoulos reached first on an error by Batkoski. Baron Frost, who was 0-for-12 on the weekend, delivered his first hit with a single to right, advancing Metropoulos to third. Metropoulos scored on a sacrifice fly out by third baseman Billy Hart. Freshman Daniel Perales singled to right to score Frost and Hankerd reached first on an error by third baseman John Otness before Moon hit his seventh home run on the season on a 3-1 count to right off Lincecum.
Otness went 2-for-3 with a double and four RBI for the Huskies.
