USC Bats Silenced By Oregon Arms In 4-2 Loss

EUGENE, Ore. - The USC baseball team was limited to just four hits by Oregon's pitching staff while committing two costly errors in a 4-2 loss to the No. 9 Ducks Sunday afternoon at PK Park. The Trojans fall below .500 (22-23, 7-15) on the season while the Ducks improve to 37-14 (18-8 Pac-12).
Oregon starter Jake Reed opened the game by drilling Garret Houts who advanced to second on a sac-bunt by Kevin Roundtree. Alex Sherrod then lined up the middle to score Houts to give USC the early advantage.
With runners on the corners in the second, Oregon's J.J. Altobelli singled up the middle to score Brett Hambright and even the game at 1-1.
In the third, the Ducks took the lead as Aaron Jones led off with a double, advanced on a sac-bunt and scored on a groundout to second. Oregon would tack on another in the fourth after a double by Altobelli and an RBI single from Aaron Payne to go up 3-1.
Oregon's Jake Reed was stellar, allowing just two runs on four hits in seven innings of work in the win to improve to 6-3.
Thomas Thorpe came on to pitch the eighth for Oregon and retired Roundtree, Sherrod and Matt Foat in order.
Triggs returned for the eighth inning but would give way to Brad Douthit after Brett Hambright reached second on an error by Roberts at short. Triggs (L 4-6) allowed three runs on 13 hits while striking out seven in 7 1/3 innings. After an intentional walk to Altobelli, Payne made the Trojans pay with an RBI single to give the Ducks a two run lead going into the ninth.
Thorpe drilled Dante Flores to start the inning and was relieved by Jimmie Sherfy as Roberts came to the plate. He retired Roberts on a pop out to second for the first out of the ninth. Brandon Garcia drew a walk and was replaced at first by the speedy Omar Cotto Lozada. Jake Hernandez then pinch hit for Kevin Swick but went down on strikes to bring the Trojans to their final out. Sherfy then struck out Garrett Stubbs to end the game and pick up his 15th save of the season in the Ducks 4-2 victory.
Notes: Roberts singled in the seventh and has now reached base safely in 23-straight games...Alex Sherrod (2-for-4) picked up his 12th multi-hit game of the season...Oregon had five players put up two or more hits Sunday afternoon.
USC returns to action tomorrow at 6 p.m. in the series finale with the Ducks.
