No. 15 USC Unable to Overcome Late-Inning Rally by Stanford, Fall 3-2|
May 9, 2015
LOS ANGELES - The Cardinal put up three runs in the eighth inning to take a 3-2 lead and the No.1 5 Trojans were unable to recover, falling 3-2 in game two of the series at Dedeaux Field.
The Trojans (33-16, 14-9) jumped out to a 2-0 lead, as they tacked on a run in the fourth and another in the sixth, with Robinson scoring both runs. In the fourth, Robinson was hit by the pitch and Dante Flores (Norwalk, Calif./St. John Bosco HS) laces a double into the gap in right center to bring home Robinson from first. Robinson then launched his third home run of the year, a solo shot to right field in the bottom of the sixth to put the Trojans up 2-0.
Trojan starter Kyle Twomey (Placenita, Calif.) had a solid outing, going six-complete scoreless innings, scattering five hits and allowing just one walk to six strikeouts in the eventual no-decision.
After a 1-2-3 seventh inning for reliever Brent Wheatley (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS), he found himself in some trouble in the eighth inning. Drew Jackson led off the inning with a single and after Wheatley recovered with a strikeout, he allowed a walk to Tommy Edman. A wild pitch advanced the runners 90 feet to second and third and Wheatley then walked Zack Hoffpauir to laod the bases with just one out. Tyler Gilbert (Felton, Calif./Santa Barbara City College) entered in relief.
After a good battle, Matt Winaker drew a walk to put the Cardinal on the board, 2-1. Austin Barr then went first-pitch swinging and singled into right field to score two more and put the Cardinal up, 3-2. Gilbert then got Jonny Locher to strikeout and Bobby Stahel (Needles, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) made a web gem of a catch, laying out in left field for a sure extra-base hit for Alex Dunlap to end the inning and keep the game close.
The Trojans were retired 1-2-3 in the eighth and in the bottom of the ninth, had a chance as Blake Lacey (Clovis, Calif./Clovis HS) drew a leadoff walk. Pinch hitter Angelo Armenta (Monrovia, Calif./Loyola HS) laid down the sac bunt to put the potential game-tying run at second. However, AJ Ramirez (Phoenix, Ariz./Bakersfield Christian HS) and pinch hitter David Edson (Las Vegas, Nev./Faith Lutheran HS) each struck out to strand the runner and end the game.
Cardinal reliever Tyler Thorne got the win in three-innings of hitless relief.
The Trojans and Cardinal will meet in the rubber match on Sunday at 3 p.m. PT at Dedeaux Field. The game will be televised live on Pac-12 Networks.
