USC Records 5-0 Shutout Over No. 12 Cal Poly|

LOS ANGELES - Senior left-hander Anthony Vasquez (San Antonio, Texas/Texas A&M) threw a complete game shutout Tuesday, striking out a career-high 13 batters, as the USC Trojans shut out the No. 12 Cal Poly Mustangs, 5-0, in non conference action. Vasquez became the first USC pitcher since Mark Prior (April 12, 2001) to throw a complete game two-hitter.
USC evened its overall record to 23-23 while Cal Poly fell to 32-13.
Vasquez retired 14 straight batters through the middle of the game and struck out the side twice. He also finished the game with four consecutive strikeouts. At the plate, Vasquez went 2-for-4 with one RBI while freshman first baseman Ricky Oropesa (Rancho Cucamonga/Etiwanda HS) was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Oropesa hit his 12th home run of the season and now has six homers in his last 10 games.
The Trojans scored three times in the first, which proved to be enough. Mike O'Neill walked and later scored on Grant Green's RBI double to right center. Oropesa then hammered a two-run shot to left center for the 3-0 lead.
USC will play two road games this weekend at Cal State Northridge, Saturday-Sunday (May 9-10) Both games start at 1 p.m. and will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
