Trojans Blast TCU 9-3 in Game Two of Series
May 3, 2013
LOS ANGELES - The Trojans took the lead on a big fifth inning and never looked back, tallying eight runs in the inning alone as they defeated visiting TCU 9-3 in game two of the three game series at Dedeaux Field on Friday evening.
The Trojans were down 2-0 until the bottom of the fifth, where they batted around the order and eventually scored eight runs on six hits with one error to take an 8-2 lead that they never relinquished.
Overall the Trojans pounded out 11 hits, and were led at the plate by multi-hit days for Adam Landecker (Calabasas, Calif./Calabasas HS), Blake Lacey (Clovis, Calif./Clovis HS), Greg Zebrack (Northridge, Calif./UPenn) and Kevin Swick (La Canada, Calif./Loyola HS). Catcher Garrett Stubbs (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) led the team with two RBIs on his 1-for-3 day.
Starter Wyatt Strahan (Villa Park, Calif./Villa Park HS) earned his third win of the year, going seven complete innings and allowing only three runs on six hits, while striking out four. Freshman reliever Brent Wheatley (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) put up a shutout in the final two innings of the game where he did not allow a hit.
The Horned Frogs got off to an early 2-0 lead, putting up runs in the second and the fifth on two-out RBI singles.
The Trojans answered the bottom of the fifth, however, as Swick started the inning with a single to left center and Timmy Robinson (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View HS) drew a walk. With two on, Bobby Stahel (Needles, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) put down a nice sacrifice bunt to advance the runners. Next up was Landecker, and when the count went 3-0, Horned Frog starter Brandon Finnegan intentionally walked him to load the bases. With the bases loaded and the count 1-0 to Dante Flores (Norwalk, Calif./St. John Bosco HS) was hit by the pitch to bring in a run. That chased Horned Frog starter Finnegan and Justin Scharf entered in relief. Back-to-back singles on first pitches by James Roberts (Cupertino, Calif./Archbishop Mitty HS) and Lacey plated runs and the Trojans took a 3-2 lead. They did not let down, as Zebrack singled in another run to put USC up 4-2 and that brought another pitching change, as Travis Evans was brought in from the bullpen. Stubbs then singled to drive in two runs and Swick then put down a squeeze bunt to plate the seventh run of the inning. Then with two outs, Robinson singled to left field to plate the final run of the inning and the Trojans took their 8-2 lead to the top of the sixth.
The Horned Frogs tacked on another run on a two-out triple in the top of the seventh to make the score 8-3. However, the Trojans got that run back with a two-out Landecker double to put the game at 9-4, Trojans.
The Trojans and Horned Frogs will meet for the series rubber match at 12 p.m. PT tomorrow (Saturday) at Dedeaux Field.
