LOS ANGELES - Senior RHP Jack Krawczyk earned his nation-leading 18th save of the season, tying a school single-season record, as the No. 6 USC baseball team defeated UC Santa Barbara, 9-8, in a nonconference contest on Wednesday afternoon at Dedeaux Field. It was the final home game of the season for the Trojans.
USC improved to 37-13 overall while UC Santa Barbara fell to 16-23-2.
Krawczyk pitched the final 1 1/3 innings, giving up one hit and getting one strikeout. It was the 44th save of his career, which is No. 3 on the all-time NCAA Division I list.
Trailing 8-7 entering the bottom of the seventh, USC led off the inning with two walks. The Gauchos changed pitchers, and junior LHP/DH Jason Lane (6-1) loaded the bases with a single. Junior RF Brad Ticehurst walked to drive in a run, tying the score. After a fielder's choice retired a runner at home, senior 2B Wes Rachels hit a sacrifice fly to give USC the lead, 9-8.
Sophomore LHP Matt Dailey took the loss for the Gauchos.
USC got off to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the third after Rachels hit an RBI triple, junior 1B Robb Gorr had an RBI single, senior 3B Morgan Ensberg knocked a two-run double and senior C Jeff DePippo had a run-scoring single.
But the Gauchos came back with five runs in the top of the fourth. UCSB loaded the bases with one out and freshman 1B Dave Molidor walked to drive in a run, then junior CF Jim Alderete hit a grand slam to center field.
USC went back ahead, 6-5, in the bottom of the fourth on freshman CF Rod Perry's RBI groundout. The two teams then traded runs until the Trojans finally went ahead in the bottom of the seventh.
Junior LF Brad Wright went 3-for-5 to lead the Gauchos, while Ticehurst hit his 11th home run of the season for the Trojans in the sixth inning.
USC takes a nine-day break for finals before closing out the Pacific-10 Conference Southern Division season with three games at Stanford on May 9-11, a series that may decide the Six-Pac champion.
