April 27, 2013
CORVALLIS, Ore.- Despite matching No. 7 Oregon State in hits, the Trojans were unable to plate key runs, leaving five runners on base and hitting into two double plays as they fell 3-0 in game two of the Pac-12 series at Goss Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Trojan starter Wyatt Strahan (Villa Park, Calif./Villa Park HS), had a strong start in the loss going 7.2 innings, scattering five hits and allowing only three runs. He walked three and finished with three strikeouts.
Catcher Garrett Stubbs (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) led the team with a 2-for-3 day and threw out two base runners attempting to steal. Bobby Stahel (Needles, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) also had two hits, as he went 2-for-4.
The Beavers got on the board in the bottom of the second, as a leadoff walk came back to haunt the Trojans. After a wild pitch advanced the runner to second, a single to second base plated the first run of the game and put the Trojans down, 1-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Beavers struck again, as slugger Michael Conforto hit a solo home run to left field to lead off the inning and put the Trojans in a 2-0 hole.
The Trojans stranded runners in the third and fourth innings, but one of the better scoring opportunities came in the fifth inning. Kevin Swick (La Canada, Calif./Loyola HS) worked a one-out walk and Garrett Stubbs (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) followed with a single. However, the next Trojan batter Timmy Robinson(Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View HS) hit into an inning ending double play.
Another good opportunity came in the top of the sixth inning, as Bobby Stahel (Needles, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) singled to lead off the inning. However, the next Trojan, Adam Landecker (Calabasas, Calif./Calabasas HS), reached first base as he couldn't get the sacrifice bunt down and Stahel was thrown out at second. Landecker reached second on a passed ball and advanced to third on a groundout. With two outs, James Roberts (Cupertino, Calif./Archbishop Mitty HS) worked a walk to put runners on the corners. A fielder's choice from Blake Lacey(Clovis, Calif./Clovis HS) got third out at second base to end the Trojans' threat.
In the seventh inning the Trojans also stranded a base runner.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Beavers added one more run, as a leadoff single hurt the Trojans when a two-out single plated the run from third. Freshman lefty Sean Adler(Northridge, Calif./Sierra Canyon HS) entered in relief to strike out Conforto with two runners on to end the Beavers' threat and the inning.
The Trojans were unable to put anything together in the top of the ninth, as Beaver reliever Tony Bryant, who entered in the eighth, retired the side in order to record the save and the Trojans fell, 3-0.
Game three of the series is set for Sunday at 12:05 p.m. PT, where the Trojans will look to take a game in the series.
