Trojans with Commanding 10-0 Win in Game One of Series Against Crosstown Rival UCLA|
April 26, 2014
LOS ANGELES - The USC baseball team took care of business on Friday evening, defeating crosstown rival UCLA 3-2 to take the Pac-12 series behind strong pitching from starter Brent Wheatley, reliever Kyle Twomey and closer Kyle Davis.
The trio of Wheatley (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS), Twomey (Placentia, Calif./El Dorado HS) and Davis (Garden Grove, Calif./Pacifica HS) held the Bruins to just two runs on four hits, with one of the runs being unearned. Wheatley took the win, as he went six complete innings, three hits, two runs (one earned), while striking out four and walking just three.
After Twomey threw 1.2 innings of shutout ball, Davis entered in the bottom of the eighth in a big spot, with runners on the corners with two outs. Davis got a huge strikeout of pinch hitter Brett Stephens to end the inning. He then put up a zero in the bottom of the ninth to record his team-leading sixth save of the year.
At the plate, the Trojans tallied their three runs on six hits. Jake Hernandez (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Los Osos HS) led the team with a 2-for-3 day at the plate. He also drove in one of the Trojans three runs. Kevin Swick (La Canada, Calif./Loyola HS) and Reggie Southall (Gardena, Calif./Serra HS) also drove in runs on the day as the Trojans put up two runs in the fourth inning to retake the lead.
For the second-straight game, the Trojans got to the Bruins in the top of the first inning. With one down, Garrett Stubbs (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) was hit by the pitch to reach base. Then Jeremy Martinez (Fountain Valley, Calif./Mater Dei HS) walked to put two on with one out for Hernandez. The senior delivered a single through the left side to put the Trojans up 1-0. Bruin starter Grant Watson was able to minimize the damage and prevent the big inning.
The Bruins put two runs up in the bottom of the second inning to take a 2-1 lead, taking advantage of a throwing error by Trojan second baseman that allowed two to score on a fielder's choice by Aaron Weimer.
Wheatley countered with a 1-2-3 third inning and the Trojans would get back on the board in the fourth inning with a two-out rally. Vahn Bozoian (Chino Hills, Calif./Ayala HS) singled through the right side to reach and bring up Southall. The redshirt freshman delivered a huge two-out double down the left field line to plate Bozoian from first and tie things up, 2-2. Next up was Swick, who came through with a single of his own to left center to score the eventual game-winning run in the bottom of the fourth.
Twomey entered in the seventh in relief of Wheatley and retired the side in order. He came up firing in the eighth inning, striking out the first two batters he faced, but the second reached on a wild pitch that got to the backstop. After hitting the next batter, Twomey got Kevin Williams to hit into a fielder's choice, putting runners on the corners with two outs. Davis then entered and recorded a big strikeout to end the inning.
In the bottom of the ninth, Davis got two quick outs, but Trent Chatterton legged out a single to put on on. Davis got the pinch hitter Kort Peterson to ground out to end the game and preserve the victory.
The Trojans have now won three-straight Pac-12 series for the first time since 2011. The series win is their first over crosstown rival UCLA since 2008.
The Trojans will look for the series sweep tomorrow at 2 p.m. PT at Jackie Robinson Field.
