CORVALLIS, Ore. - Despite home runs from Kevin Swick and Adam Landecker, a few big innings doom the Trojans, as they fell 10-4 in the series opener at No. 7 Oregon State on Friday afternoon.

Swick (La Canada, Calif./Loyola HS) and Landecker (Calabasas, Calif./Calabasas HS) both hit their first home runs of the season, solo shots to left field in the third and ninth innings, respectively, but Beaver starter Matt Boyd was just too much for the Trojans to handle. Boyd took the win in 8.1 innings, scattering five hits and allowing three runs, while striking out 11 Trojans.

USC's starter Bob Wheatley (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) went six complete innings in his first Friday start in three weeks, only allowing three runs on 11 hits and didn't surrender a walk.

The first big inning for the Beavers came in the bottom of the second, the Beavers led off the inning with a single, before Wheatley was able to get a fly ball out to sit down one Beaver. However, the next three batters each hit singles and three runs were scored. Wheatley settled down to get the next two outs, but the Trojans trailed, 3-0 as they went into the top of the third.

On the first pitch Boyd threw in the top of the third, Swick hammered it off the roof of the batting cages in left field to pull the Trojans within two, 3-1. Wheatley put up zeros in the next four innings for the Trojans to keep them within striking distance.

However, the Trojan offense just wasn't working, and in the bottom of the seventh, the Beavers touched up reliever Matt Munson (Irvine, Calif./Saddleback College) for three runs on three hits and one walk in 0.2 innings of work. With two outs and two runners on, Brooks Kriske (Palm Desert, Calif./Palm Desert HS) came in from the pen to put out the fire and keep the score at 6-1.

The Beavers then added on four more in the bottom of the eighth inning off Trojan reliever James Guillen (Covina, Calif./Damien HS) to put the score at 10-1. Three of the four runs came with two down in the inning.

The Trojans got to Boyd in the top of the ninth. After getting a strikeout to start the inning, Landecker stroked his first home run of the season off the batting cages in left field to put the score at 10-2. After giving up a single to Dante Flores (Norwalk, Calif./St. John Bosco HS), the Beavers went to their pen, bringing in Brandon Jackson. James Roberts (Cupertino, Calif./Archbishop Mitty HS) singled again for the Trojans. Wild pitches advanced the Trojans 90 feet, and a Blake Lacey (Clovis, Calif./Clovis HS) ground out plated the second run of the inning. Another wild pitch advanced Roberts to third, and a throwing error by the third baseman on a Greg Zebrack (Northridge, Calif./UPenn) plated the third run of the inning, putting the score at 10-4.

The Trojans will regroup and head back out to Goss Stadium to face the Beavers in game two of the series at 2:05 p.m. PT tomorrow (Saturday).
