No. 5 Baseball Defeats UCLA, 14-6
April 24, 1998
WESTWOOD, Calif. - Senior RHP Seth Etherton set new Pac-10 and USC records for strikeouts and earned his 10th win of the season as the No. 5 Trojan baseball defeated UCLA, 14-6, at Jackie Robinson Stadium on Friday night.
The Trojans won the first game of this three-game set and improved to 34-12 overall and 18-7 in the Pacific-10 Conference Southern Division. UCLA fell to 18-29, 10-18.
Etherton had a rocky outing, going 6 1/3 innings and giving up 10 hits, five runs and three walks, but also had three strikeouts to give him 364 in his career, breaking the mark held by former Trojan Brent Strom, who had 363 from 1968-70.
After the Bruins took a 1-0 lead after one inning, senior 3B Morgan Ensberg slugged a solo home run, his team-leading 14th of the year, to tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the second. A double- steal in the top of the third scored senior C Jeff DePippo and made it 2-1.
In the top of the fourth, senior LF Jeremy Freitas had an RBI double, freshman SS Seth Davidson had a sacrifice fly and junior RF Brad Ticehurst hit a solo home run to extend USC's lead to 5-1.
The Bruins didn't go quietly, however, hitting four home runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. USC matched UCLA's runs, though, and after seven innings, USC's lead was 10-6.
A two-run single by Freitas made it 12-6 in the top of the eighth, and an RBI triple by Ticehurst and a sacrifice fly by DePippo ended the scoring in the ninth.
DePippo was 3-for-4 with three RBI, Freitas had two hits and three RBI, Davidson and Ticehurst each had two hits and two RBI and junior CF Greg Hanoian had two hits for the Trojans.
USC and UCLA meet again on Saturday at Dedeaux Field at 1 p.m., then are back at Jackie Robinson Stadium on Sunday at 1 p.m.
